Continence Physiotherapy
|
|
Many
women suffer a degree of incontinence during their lifetime, particularly
after child birth and menopause. Incontinence can also be a problem for men,
especially after prostate surgery or disease. Research
has shown physiotherapy to be effective in treating incontinence in 80% of
cases, therefore eliminating the need for surgery. A
successful outcome using physiotherapy is dependent on the patient
understanding and being able to contract their pelvic floor muscles. It is
important therefore to design an individually-tailored exercise program
suited to the patient’s current muscle strength, endurance and fatigability.
A specially trained continence physiotherapist is required to provide expert
guidance to achieve the correct technique and design the right program. Long-term
success relies on maintaining a strong pelvic floor once the muscles have
been initially strengthened, with regular pelvic floor muscle exercises,
taking very little time, incorporated into daily living. General exercise is
also encouraged, with low impact activities preferable to high impact. Ringwood
Physiotherapy & Spinal Clinic offers a new Continence Physiotherapy
service to men and women of all ages who may be experiencing a reduction in
their control of continence or have been advised that they are developing a
urogenital prolapse. |
