Headache: A Pain in the Neck? Yes!

Headaches, whether they are migraine, tension or stress, consistently have a close relationship to the neck. If the headaches are coming from a neck disorder, the disorder will involve one or more of the upper three spinal joints.

Post-graduate trained musculoskeletal physiotherapists use techniques which assess the movement of these joints and may determine if the neck is the source of the headaches and which spinal joints are involved.

Once identified, the abnormal joint can be gently treated using specific movement therapy to improve joint mobility.

The portion of the headache related to the neck will improve.

Interestingly, the neck itself does not necessarily need to be painful in order for it to be a source of headache.

A preliminary medical assessment can assist in identifying non-neck related headache. This may include blood tests or radiology as part of the assessment.
